Northlane Solutions

Standards we build to

Every design, supply and installation Northlane Solutions delivers is anchored to a published reference. These are the regulations and standards we build to across heliport, airfield lighting and obstruction lighting work in Saudi Arabia, and what we apply each one for.

GACA (Saudi Arabia)

GACAR Part 138: Heliports

The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation regulation governing heliport certification and operation in the Kingdom. It sets the requirements a Saudi heliport must meet for establishment permission, physical characteristics, lighting, marking and obstacle protection. NLS engineers helipad and heliport designs, lighting layouts and marking schemes against GACAR Part 138 and prepares design documentation to support GACA submissions.

GACAR Part 139: Aerodromes

The Saudi regulation for aerodrome certification, applying ICAO Annex 14 Volume I requirements at licensed Saudi airports. Runway, taxiway and apron lighting, marking and obstacle control at certified aerodromes fall under this framework. NLS supplies and installs airfield ground lighting and marking work aligned to GACAR Part 139 at Saudi aerodrome projects.

ICAO

ICAO Annex 14 Volume I: Aerodrome Design and Operations

The international reference for aerodrome physical characteristics, visual aids and obstacle restriction. It defines runway and taxiway lighting configurations, marking geometry, obstacle limitation surfaces and the characteristics of obstruction lighting on structures. NLS designs airfield lighting layouts, marking schemes and obstruction lighting selections directly against Annex 14 Volume I requirements.

ICAO Annex 14 Volume II: Heliports

The international standard for heliport physical characteristics, lighting and marking: TLOF and FATO geometry, perimeter and floodlighting, the H identification marking and approach indicators. GACAR Part 138 applies the same reference at licensed Saudi heliports. NLS engineers every helipad lighting and marking scope against Annex 14 Volume II dimensions, colours and tolerances.

ICAO Doc 9261: Heliport Manual

The implementation manual behind Annex 14 Volume II, covering heliport planning, design application and rescue and firefighting categorisation. Heliport firefighting provision is sized to the categories this manual sets out. NLS uses Doc 9261 for heliport design decisions Annex 14 states as requirements without application guidance, including firefighting category determination and vertiport-adjacent planning while dedicated eVTOL standards mature.

ICAO Doc 9157: Aerodrome Design Manual

The design manual series supporting Annex 14 Volume I, including the electrical systems and visual aids parts that govern how airfield lighting circuits, constant current series circuits and control systems are engineered in practice. NLS references Doc 9157 for airfield lighting electrical design, circuit architecture and control system integration.

ICAO Doc 9137: Airport Services Manual

The operational services manual referenced for runway surface condition assessment, including the friction measurement programmes that continuous friction measuring equipment supports. NLS references Doc 9137 alongside FAA guidance when scoping runway friction testing programmes for Saudi aerodromes.

FAA

FAA AC 150/5390-2: Heliport Design

The FAA advisory circular for heliport design geometry, safety areas and approach surfaces. Several Saudi industrial operators specify FAA practice for their facilities, so heliport projects in the Kingdom frequently need a design reconciled across FAA and GACAR references. NLS designs helipads to AC 150/5390-2 where a project specifies FAA practice and maps the result against GACAR Part 138 for the Saudi approval path.

FAA AC 150/5340-1: Standards for Airport Markings

The FAA standard for airport pavement marking patterns, dimensions and colours. NLS references it alongside ICAO Annex 14 for marking scopes on projects that follow FAA practice, and for marking material and retroreflectivity expectations.

FAA AC 150/5340-30: Design and Installation Details for Airport Visual Aids

The FAA installation reference for airport lighting: fixture mounting, base cans, conduit and cable routing, and circuit installation details. NLS applies it as the workmanship reference for airfield lighting installation on projects following FAA practice.

FAA AC 150/5345 series: Airport Lighting Equipment Specifications

The FAA equipment specification series for airport lighting hardware, including AC 150/5345-10 for constant current regulators, AC 150/5345-47 for series isolation transformers and AC 150/5345-27 for wind cone assemblies. NLS specifies equipment conforming to the relevant 5345 specification when a project follows FAA equipment practice.

FAA AC 150/5320-12: Skid Resistant Airport Pavement Surfaces

The FAA reference for measuring, constructing and maintaining skid resistant runway surfaces, including friction survey frequencies and the classification of friction levels. NLS scopes continuous friction measurement programmes against this reference together with ICAO guidance.

NFPA

NFPA 418: Standard for Heliports

The US fire protection standard for heliports, setting extinguishing agent types, quantities, discharge rates and application methods for helicopter fire scenarios. NLS sizes heliport firefighting provision against NFPA 418 alongside the ICAO Doc 9261 category method.

IEC

IEC 60598: Luminaires

The international safety standard for luminaires, covering electrical, thermal and mechanical safety requirements and ingress protection classification. Lighting fixtures NLS specifies and supplies conform to the applicable parts of IEC 60598 from their manufacturers.

IEC 61822: Constant Current Regulators

The international standard for constant current regulators used in aeronautical ground lighting series circuits, covering output accuracy, brightness steps, protection and monitoring behaviour. Regulators NLS specifies conform to IEC 61822 or the equivalent FAA specification, matched to the project's stated practice.
